Over 1,200 km, through 5 countries and 15 turnpoints, with participants from all corners of the globe: It’s the Red Bull X-Alps – the world’s toughest adventure race.

THE RACE
The route starts in Kitzbühel – Kirchberg and crosses the mountains of Austria and southern Germany before moving deep into the Alps of Switzerland, France and northern Italy. The athletes will cross the Aletsch glacier, the longest in Europe, and will get their climbing gear out to reach the Drei Zinnen/ Tre Cime turnpoint in the Sexten Dolomites.
The Athletes cover up to 150 km every day – sometimes more. On foot, they’ll be negotiating narrow trails, steep via ferratas and glimmering white snowfields; by paraglider they’ll be flying over peaks and valleys, with the west wind either in their faces or at their backs. It’s an extreme endurance test, both physically and psychologically, forcing contestants to deal with extremes in temperatures, harsh weather, injury, fatigue and unforeseeable challenges that have to be overcome during the course of the race. Many will concede defeat, but a select few will make it through to the finish.

The movie Der Künstler des Himmel" presents us with Maurer's flight as a metaphor for transformation, an invitation to recognise the art that is hidden in the act of flying.
